Geologic Names

Q: Is a formal review required if my manuscript has geologic names?

A: It is the policy of the USGS to have a geologic names review for all Survey publications that contain stratigraphic nomenclature. This review may be conducted by someone designated by the author's Team or by the geologic names reviewer in CPG.

Q: Where can I get a copy of the 1983 North American Stratigraphic Code?

A: The North American Stratigraphic Code can be ordered from AAPG for $3.00 ($2.00 for members). The Code may also be accessed online at http://www.agiweb.org/nacsn/code2.html

Q: What is GEOLEX?

A: GEOLEX is an online geologic names database and is part of the National Geologic Map Database. GEOLEX may be accessed at http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Geolex/geolex_home.html

Q: How is GEOLEX updated?

A: For the Central Region, please notify Tom Judkins in CPG of any new formal nomenclature or revisions to exiting nomenclature, either originating from a USGS author or found in published literature. This new data will then be forwarded to the GEOLEX staff in Reston. Tom can be reached at: tjudkins@usgs.gov or 303-236-5486.
